Messing It Up For the Rest of Us

Well, I was planning on posting a paragraph or two regarding some tips on breaking in given to me by an associate editor at Vertigo, but I was watching the news and came across the Kenneth Eng/AsianWeek scandal. So I thought I'd address that first.

For those of you not familiar with the story, the weekly San Francisco paper AsianWeek published a column entitled "Why I Hate Blacks" written by Kenneth Eng. The article is short and filled with ridiculous generalizations by a ridiculous man. The SFGate has a scan of the original article here.

The article is upsetting and disappointing to me. I can't believe the people at AsianWeek actually printed that piece of fecal hate speech that Mr. Eng tried to pass off as writing. I could really care less about Kenneth Eng. People like him, unfortunately, are a dime a dozen. There will always be people who make sweeping generalizations due to their ignorance. I've come to realize that I can't change these people.

What truly bothers me is that this article saw print in a paper called AsianWeek. Now people are talking about the article as if it is an accurate representation of the views of Asians everywhere.

It's not.

Kenneth Eng doesn't speak for me. He doesn't speak for the majority of Asian Americans. He speaks only for himself and I hope people can see that. There's no doubt in my mind that his article will ferret out others like himself to combat his article, or even come in defense of it, all the while spewing more hate speech. Fine, do what you have to do, but don't connect the the rest of us to Eng just because we share a similar skin color.

To Kenneth Eng, I hope you get what's coming to you. Karma is a bitch my friend, a big, big bitch with a handbag full of bricks.

To AsianWeek, you should have known better than to print this piece. You deserve just as much blame for printing the work as the "writer" did for writing it. You have done a disservice to the Asian community and made all of us look bad. That rests squarely on your shoulders.
